Information and Tips for Great Senior Portraits
What to wear
For the most pleasing portraits, it is best to wear colors that will compliment your features and your style. For a natural feel to your photos, wear earth tones or muted colors. I use a lot of greenery for backgrounds, so I would caution you against wearing a lot of green. If you want more vibrant and colorful photos, wear bolder colors. Please do not wear clothing with logos or characters as this will take away from the true subject of the photo – you! Prints and patterns can also be very distracting, so avoid them as well. In order to add interest, you may want to layer your colors or use accessories such as chunky necklaces or hairbands and bows. If you’re in doubt or you’re considering something that doesn’t follow “the rules” please send me a snapshot of what you would like to wear and I will be happy to provide more assistance.

What to do with your hair
If you struggle with hairstyling (like I do) then it may be worth having a professional styling the day of your shoot. It is not recommended to get your hair cut or colored the same day. Haircuts and color should be done a week to 10 days prior to your photo shoot.

What to do with your nails
It’s easy to get caught up in the other preparations and forget about your nails. Since your hands (and perhaps bare feet) will show up in your photos, please consider getting a manicure and pedicure or do it yourself.

What to do when applying makeup
Women should wear slightly more makeup than usual but don’t go overboard. If you have any major blemishes, it is easier for me to retouch them during editing than to “undo” overdone makeup.

What to expect
Expect to get a lot of direction about where to stand or sit and what to do. I tend to go for fun and relaxed (i.e. "living life") portraits and sometimes this means you will be asked to do something silly or outrageous. I also try to get some more traditional poses - especially if you indicated that as a preference during our pre-session consultation. Most full sessions will take between 1 and 2 hours.

What to bring
Bring lots of outfits! We will try to capture different scenes and having several outfit options will help give each scene a different look and feel. If you have a school uniform you would like to wear for your photos, please arrange to borrow it before your session. Other props might include musical instruments, sporting equipment, or even a favorite book. Don't forget to bring, a brush, powder for touch-ups.
